A Note on Our Name
Our name comes from two places.
The first is Yoruba — a language and culture rooted in West Africa and alive throughout the African diaspora. In Yoruba, Olamina means "my wealth is plentiful" or "wealth is mine." It is a declaration of abundance. A reclamation.
The second is Octavia E. Butler — the visionary Black science fiction writer, whose novel Parable of the Sower introduced the world to Lauren Olamina, a young Black woman who builds community and finds meaning in the middle of a world unraveling. Lauren Olamina is an empath, a leader, and a survivor. She does not wait for someone to rescue her. She shapes change.
We chose this name because both meanings live in the work we do. Therapy at Olamina is about reclaiming your abundance — your wholeness, your rootedness, your right to heal. And it is about shaping change: not just enduring life's transitions, but finding the agency and the tools to move through them with intention and grace.
Shape Change. Root Freedom. These aren't just words on a logo. They are the philosophy of this practice.
Our Priorities
Healing is political
Individual suffering doesn't happen in a vacuum. We name the systemic forces — racism, ableism, capitalism, heteronormativity — that shape our inner lives. Healing that ignores the outside world is incomplete healing.
Honoring the whole person
Your identity, your community, your history, your body, your neurology — all of it belongs in the room. There is no version of you that is unwelcome here.
We are always growing
We hold ourselves to ongoing learning, accountability, and growth. We are not a finished product. We are a living, breathing collective — still rooting, still shaping.
Ongoing Learning
We engage in continuous training in anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and liberatory approaches to care.
Community Rooted
We are embedded in the communities we serve, not extracted from them. Our care is relational, not transactional.
Sliding Scale Access
We are committed to making care accessible. A range of fee options are available — please reach out to discuss yours.
